The Great Hair Massacre of '07

I've been styling my own hair for a long time. Long enough to know how to do things. I've used several different kinds of brushes, hair dryers, gels, mousses, hair sprays and curling devices over the years. Not once have I seriously damaged my hair...until the very first week of the year 2007 when I burned a good chunk of it off. What a way to start the year. I have no idea how this happened (didn't change my routine), I just know that the very pungent smell of burning hair coupled with the very short remaining spike of hair is not the best recipe for a good hair day...or month.

The really bad thing is that my hair grows at possibly the slowest rate of anyone on the planet. It always has. So, while I'm waiting for my burned stub of hair to grow back to an acceptable length, I have to wrangle the spike with as many products as possible so that it doesn't stand up all the time like I'm trying to imitate Alfalfa from The Little Rascals or something. Luckily, I can reasonably camouflage this unfortunate mishap with a little gel and hair spray.

You know, my brother never took a pair of scissors to my hair as a kid because, well, I didn't really have any hair to cut off. I guess this is just kharma catching up with me.

Picture! You must post a picture!

Sorry this happened, though, Rach.

The same thing happened during my high school trip to Spain. This girl plugged a regular American curling iron into a European outlet. She burned off a HUGE chunk of hair at the front - right at eyebrow level. AND the curling iron melted in half.

If it makes you feel better- I haven't noticed anything of the kind when I've seen you at church. You must be doing a good job of hiding it. Although, now I know to look more closely! Ha!

I'll share my worst hair experience, like Kristen did- maybe that will help you feel better. The worst thing I ever did was spray sun-in on my hair on a week long trip to the beach my first or second year of high school. My extremely dark hair turned very blond. And then, it began to grow out. I had almost black roots that suddenly turned to streaky blond hair the rest of the way down. The worst part was I had to wait for the entire mess to grow out over a year or more's time as I slowly chopped away at the blond streakiness at the bottom. The day I cut the last of that blond mess out of my hair was one of the happiest of my life. I paid for that mistake for a very long time.
