I'm An Adult

I had a dream last night about high school. What was in the dream isn't important (since I can't remember it anyway), but I woke up being slightly disoriented that I'm well out of high school, college, almost 5 years into marriage, and about to have our first child. Do you ever stop and think sometimes that you can't believe where you are in life?

Sometimes I can't believe I'm an adult. I guess I remember that longing to be independent so much that I can't believe I'm there (here, actually)...living it. And so far, despite the few downsides to independence (you know, paying bills and such), it's going well. I like it.

If someone had asked me in high school (and they probably did at some point) where I would be in 10 years, I probably would have described my life roughly as it is right now. Minus a few specifics like who I would marry, what job I would have and where exactly I would live. That's not to say that if things hadn't turned out like this for me that I wouldn't be happy. But it's more that I'm looking back at what I expected and dreamed for myself and seeing it actually happen.

I think I'll probably feel this same way when I turn 40, 50, 60, etc. Maybe it is good to occasionally stop and think about where you are, where you've come and where you're going.

I felt like that when we bought our first lawn mower. We had lived in an apartment for several years and for some reason, buying the lawn mower was huge for me!! I remember thinking, Wow!! I have a mower, I'm an adult now!!

I'm a wife, a mother and a professional. I still don't feel like an adult. But maybe that's a good thing.
