Ah, Christmas Memories

Well, I am sitting here on the couch with Casey thinking about the past two days and how our Christmas this year went totally rogue. Totally unplanned, unscripted, and different from any Christmas either of us has experienced. There were fun moments...ones that we will remember for a long time. But there were not so fun moments too. And those have created some unique Christmas memories for us.

We spent Christmas Eve morning at our house and opened our presents together just the 3 of us. Then we headed off to spend the rest of the day with Casey's family, which started out great. Lots of fun, lots of food...the usual things you look forward to at Christmas. And then, the bug hit. Right about the time that the snow and ice hit. And we found ourselves on a nightmarish 3-hour ride home that usually only takes an hour at the most.

It was nightmarish because of a trifecta of stressors. Even just one of these would have been stressful, but three of them together were awesome. First, the ice on the roads was fun. We passed at least 7 accidents on the way home, sat in our share of traffic, and obviously had to travel slower than usual. Second, Ethan was up past his bedtime. We left Casey's parents' house at his usual bedtime so that by the time we got home, he was up 3 hours past his bedtime. It's always fun driving with a 19-month-old who is tired and who doesn't sleep in the car. And finally, Casey had a stomach bug and threw up on the way home a few times and felt really terrible. Super.

This was seriously not the Christmas Eve we were planning and it bled over on to Chrismas Day as well since Casey was still not feeling well. We missed an entire Christmas gathering with Casey's family, which was totally a bummer and we didn't get to do everything we had planned with my family either. Not to mention the fact that Casey was feeling sick, which is not fun ever, but especially not fun when you're missing Christmas because of it.

This is not to say that we didn't have a good Christmas in many ways. We did. But it definitely didn't turn out the way we would have planned if we could have chosen. And now we face the aftermath of Christmas...piles of trash in the garage, a living room that looks like Toys R Us threw up in it, and decorations to take down and put away. And for me...a lot of pictures to sort through and edit. I hope most of you made some Christmas memories the past few days...the good kind.

O h my goodness, so sorry! How horrible. Was Casey driving while he was sick? Yuck, yuck, yuck. Hope you are all feeling better soon. That was NOT the way to get out of all the family obligations! ;o)
