Clutter Magnet

Photobucket

I have this really useful buffet area in my kitchen that serves as a divide between the kitchen and the living room. I don't use it for preparing food, but it is so great for parties. I love how much counter space it provides. It's great. (I don't particularly love the formica countertops and honey-oak cabinets, but that's another story).

The thing is...it NEVER looks like that. Ever. Usually, it looks like this (or worse):

There is always stuff on there. I can handle there being a certain amount of things that always find their home on that counter...my keys, purse, phone, TV remotes (to keep out of reach of Ethan), etc. But this countertop has a magnetic pull for clutter. It is the catch-all space in our house.

When we walk in the door with things...we put them there. When I don't have a place for something yet...I put it there. It just collects STUFF all the time. And I feel like I'm constantly clearing off that counter every single day, several times a day. Just when I get it cleared off, the clutter is back just as quickly. I can't keep up with it, it drives me nuts, and I don't know what to do about it!

Get a few cute baskets to set there and then at least when you throw stuff on the table it will be slightly less noticeable until you have time to find it a real home. I use this strategy all over our house!

I don't know how to solve it, but I can tell you we have a piece of counter top that is the same way,and I hate it!!!

Our breakfast bar area is the exact same way. I just cleaned it off and I wonder how long it will stay clean.....not long, most likely.
