Meaningful, Purposeful Relationships

When I think about the people outside my family who have influenced me the most spiritually or otherwise, it is always couples who took the time to form a genuine relationship with me (and Casey). Hospitality, generosity, and compassion pour out of these people in a completely natural way.

(If you know John and Evelyn Willis, then you know at least one of the couples of whom I am speaking. John and Evelyn drove from Abilene to attend our wedding. Dr. Willis said a prayer for us that he had prepared in advance. He gave us a copy. What an amazing couple. If you don't know them, they are two folks who have ACU students over to their house every single week for fellowship, a meal, and devotion time. They have been doing this for years. Dr. Willis is a professor in the bible dept.)

There are others too, who have influenced us this way. Those who will go out of their way to help you when you really need it. Or drive an hour each way, to attend your grandmother's funeral because they know how special she was to you. They pray with you and for you. They follow up with you on those prayer requests. They're not perfect and they share their struggles.

When I think about serving others and being selfless, these people always spring to mind. I want to be like that. I want to teach my kids to be like that.
