The Merits of Lists and Sharpie Markers

I am a person who likes to make lists. Even more than my list, I like crossing things off of my list...with a black sharpie marker. I use a sharpie because there's no question that the item is crossed off, blacked out and done. There's no wimpy line that matches the ink of the list itself and I love the finality of it. D-O-N-E.

I once was asked, during a personality analysis, at what point I would feel best when given $500 to spend at the mall: when I'm in the process of shopping and picking stuff out, or when I walk out to my car with my purchases in tow. Without a doubt, I'd feel best when I'm walking out to my car with my stuff. I feel best after I've accomplished something. I like the completion not the process. I get involved with the process of things but only to the extent that it allows me to get to the end result more efficiently.

Here's the thing about lists and my obsession with getting things done - there's always a list and always stuff to do. Just when I've crossed something off, I add something on. It's endless. This doesn't always bother me, but sometimes, I just want to be done with everything. It's hard for me to completely relax when I've got stuff on my list. But don't think I never relax - no, I do that quite well - but sometimes I feel guilty that I didn't use my time to get stuff done.

I feel like I'm constantly processing my to-do list and figuring out when I need to be productive (and wield my sharpie) or just do nothing and come back to the list later. The struggle with my personality is finding satisfaction in crossing even just one thing off the list - and I do! Black sharpie, you are my friend!

I love sharpie markers too! And crossing things off of lists! Though these days, it harder to cross things off when you're spending all your time tending to an 8 month old. I can't wait till he is a little more self-sufficient so I can get more done!

I love getting things done as well. I just keep a mental list vs a written one - although I should write stuff down - my brain has been mush since having a baby. I am very much a person who starts a project as soon as it is given to me b/c I can't stand to have anything on my plate. Of course I have to chill now that I have a baby. Things will get done when they can get done - I am learning to accept that now.

However, that black sharpie marker will definitely NOT be your friend when your curious, unstoppable toddler discovers it! That's when Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser will become your new very best friend ever!!

So true, Amberly! Ha!

Doesn't it bother you when the black sharpie marker leaks through the paper?

Oh, yeah! That does drive me crazy!

That is one of my absolute favorite things to do: make lists, then cross things off as they are completed. I just might go make a list right now!
