Confession: I do not own a coffee maker. I also do not drink coffee, which would be why I do not own a coffee maker. Casey doesn't drink it either. But, lately I have been toying with the idea of buying a coffee maker for the purpose of making coffee for guests when we have people over to the house. Time and time again, I have seen where having a coffee machine to serve others would be nice and handy. But I'm indecisive about it.
Should I even buy a coffee maker just for entertaining? And if so, which one should I get?
My criteria are simple: not too expensive, fairly easy to use, and makes decent, if not good, coffee. I don't want to be embarassed at the quality of coffee I'm serving...I might as well not offer any if that's the case. But here is the problem...I know absolutely nothing about coffee machines, nor would I be able to gauge the quality of how they brew (I do know the actual coffee beans matter the most) because I don't drink it.
I could go with a one-cup wonder like the Keurig. Or something that makes several cups at once with freshly ground beans. Those of you that drink coffee...please tell me what would be best.

My unprofessional opinion is get a cheap coffee pot and some good quality coffee grounds. Don't waste money on expensive stuff, or a coffee grinder for whole beans if you're not using them for yourselves! Although the Keurig also does chai tea lattes and hot chocolates (which you might enjoy), it's less practical when wanting to serve many people at the same time. Hope that helps!
I agree as a person addicted to coffee the machine itself doesn't really matter just the type of coffee you brew. I have the one cup Tassimo and I LOVE the lattes, hot chocolate and hot teas!!
we went with the k cups because i don't know how to make coffee. i kept making horrible coffee with the cheap coffee pot and okay coffee that we had. i enjoy the tea in the winter, too.
Yay, you are becoming coffee crossovers (at least for entertainment's sake)! I LOVE coffee though I haven't been wanting it lately. I agree with above posts--just stick with the quality grounds (I like DD or a specialty coffee from a natural food store when I feel like treating myself), don't worry so much about the coffee maker. I usually brew coffee a few times a week and use a basic 12-cup Mr. Coffee, and it works great.
I am really at a loss to help with this question, Rach. For me, coffee is a means to an end! If you add as much sugar and cream as I do, you don't taste the coffee anyway! =0)
Hi Rachel...popping in here as both a coffee and tea officianado (?). My vote is to get a French Press. Then all you need is either a stovetop or electric kettle (water boiler) that you can use for making tea, heating water for pasta, etc etc. You just put your grounds in the bottom of the French Press, add almost boiling water, let it sit for a few minutes, then press the filter and presto!! You can get a nice big 8 cupper for when you have a big party. Enjoy!
