A Day in Our Life...November 2010

Back when Ethan was right at 1 year old, I did a "day in our life" post about what a typical day was like for us. I really liked taking pictures of all the "ordinary" things we do during the day. Sometimes I forget to capture the "small" moments in our day to day lives. I don't know what made me think of it, but I decided last week to document our day again...as it is right now.

6:00 am: Logan wakes up to eat. I feed him and put him back down in the crib to sleep, which he does immediately.

6:30 am: I go take a shower. If Logan wakes up any earlier, I usually go back to bed and take a shower later, but I knew Ethan would be waking up soon, so I took my opportunity to get clean.

Photobucket

7:30 am: I hear Ethan laughing and talking to himself in his room. He says, "oh, hi mommy," to me when I walk into his room. I change his diaper, get him dressed, and we both go get baby Logan, who is awake again now. Logan is all smiles when he gets up from bed or naps. We use that sleep positioner to keep him from rolling over a thousand times and waking himself up...he is in that rolling phase right now but can't roll himself back onto his tummy all the way yet.

Photobucket

8:00 am: Ethan goes to play with his toys and Logan plays on his play mat while I get breakfast ready for us. Ethan has Eggo waffles and a banana. Daddy joins us for breakfast too.

Photobucket

Photobucket

8:20 am: Ethan plays with his apple toy on the couch beside me while I feed Logan again. I want to give Logan a little snack before he goes back down for a nap. He usually eats every 3-4 hours these days. He only stays awake for about an hour before needing to go to sleep again. The "apple" (as Ethan calls it) is a great source of entertainment and learning...Ethan adores it and we take it with us everywhere (except church, because it is loud.)

Photobucket

Photobucket

8:40 am: Ethan goes with me to lay Logan down for his nap and then we go to the playroom for a few minutes before Casey leaves for work. Ethan plays with his cars and ramps. He also likes to draw with his crayons right now, but is only interested in drawing suns and animals.

8:45 am: Casey leaves for work. We still go out to the garage every day and say goodbye to him. Ethan waves and tells Casey, "good day!" (which means "have a good day.")

Photobucket

9:00 am: Ethan and I bake Memaw's brownies for Casey's potluck lunch at work tomorrow. (I did not set up this activity for the sake of this post...we really did have to make the brownies.)

Photobucket

9:05 am: We have to start over on the brownie batter...I went to the sink for .2 seconds to grab a towel to wipe my hands on and turned back around to see Ethan with a big smile...and about a cup and a half of extra sugar in the bowl! But we had a blast baking together. I scooped the ingredients and he dumped them into the bowl. Then he stirred the batter some and sampled a few chocolate chips along the way.

9:30: We put the brownies in the oven to bake, and while we are waiting, Ethan plays with his nativity set while I wash up some dishes, tidy the kitchen, and load the dishwasher.

Photobucket

10:00 am: The brownies come out of the oven and I join Ethan in the living room and we read almost all of the Christmas books we've just gotten out and also his Lightning McQueen book that has all sorts of buttons to push during the story.

Photobucket

10:30 am: We move into the office, where I open some mail and do a little filing while Ethan watches Thomas the Train on the computer...thanks to Netflix instantly streaming movies.

11:00 am: The dishwasher is done with it's (loud) cycle so Ethan helps me put the dishes away. He puts the pot lids back on the pots in the cabinet. He knows which one goes where because several months ago, playing with the pots and pans was a favorite activity of his. He also helps me put away the tupperware and lids...and he knows where they go too (for the same reason as the pots).

Photobucket

11:30 am: Ethan decides it is time to go outside for a while. He gets his shoes out and puts them on (his crocs). He goes down the slide and plays in the fort for a while.

Photobucket

12:00 pm: I get Ethan's lunch ready and then we hear Logan is awake. Ethan eats his lunch while I go get Logan. He has a turkey and cheese "quesadilla," an orange, and some blueberries...with milk. While Ethan is still eating, I feed Logan on the couch. Usually daddy comes home for lunch to eat with us, but today he has a lunch meeting.

Photobucket

12:45 pm: Ethan goes upstairs to take his nap. He takes a nap most days (about 2-2.5 hours long), but sometimes he refuses to sit still in his room long enough to fall asleep. There are no toys in his room to play with, but he will sometimes still occupy himself with talking, singing, and scurrying around his room to avoid falling asleep. This is one of those days.

1:00 pm: While we listen to Ethan not sleeping upstairs, Logan and I have a few moments together before his next nap. He smiles for me, which I love.

Photobucket

1:15 pm: I go put Logan down in his crib again and then go put Ethan back in bed and tell him it is time to sleep and/or rest...in bed. On the days that he doesn't sleep, I still have him stay in his room for a while. Sometimes he will fall asleep if I leave him in there, and sometimes we just both need the down time!

1:20 pm: Both boys are in their rooms. Both are quiet right now, but I think only one is actually asleep (Logan). But at least Ethan is in bed. He stays quiet (maybe asleep?) so I use this time to do work for my part time job, housework, edit photos, or read blogs. Today I edit some photos and do some entering in Quickbooks for my job.

3:00 pm: I hear Ethan finally pipe up so I go check on him. I am not sure if he slept or not...but he is not in a good mood! He either did not sleep long enough or he did not sleep at all. These photos are evidence that a good nap is still needed for our big 2.5 year old. Poor buddy!

Photobucket

3:10 pm: The tears are quickly dried as we head downstairs and he realizes he can play with his toys now. He plays with his character figurines from the Rudolph movie and has a snack of raisins and water. I continue working on the computer while he is occupied.

Photobucket

4:00 pm: We go outside to check the mail and that leads to a longer-than-expected outdoor outing. Ethan hunts for different kinds of leaves. He loves leaves. I follow him around with the camera, taking photos and looking at his collected leaves.

Photobucket

Photobucket

4:45 pm: We hear Logan on the monitor and go get him. He gets a turn in front of the camera with mommy, resulting in an out-of-focus photo. I feed him, and then he plays on his playmat while Ethan plays with his "felt pieces." They are the felt bugs, flowers, and other sundry items that go to his felt book. This is another toy that he absolutely loves.

Photobucket

5:30 pm: Ethan eats dinner and Logan is still going strong on the playmat. Ethan eats some plain pasta, green beans, and chicken. After he cleans his plate, he also gets some cinnamon bread...a favorite of his!

5:45 pm: After dinner, Ethan notices that I have Logan on his tummy in the living room and he is rolling over. So, he decides to show Logan how it's done! Then they get face-to-face and have a very cute brotherly conversation!

Photobucket

Photobucket

6:00 pm: We head upstairs for bath time. Both boys get washed and dried. And Ethan gets his teeth brushed, which he is much better about these days. He likes it when I count down from 20 using funny voices for each of the numbers. He laughs along the way and he knows that when I get to 1 (I count pretty slowly), then he's done!

Photobucket

Photobucket

6:30 pm: Now that everyone is clean, we go back downstairs. Daddy is home now and cuddles with both boys on the couch. He and Ethan watch a show (usually Dora or Umizoomi) while I go feed Logan in his room and put him down for the night. He goes to bed sometime between 6-7 every night.

Photobucket

6:45 pm: I go downstairs and get to work on dinner. Usually I will do some prep work while Ethan is eating dinner so I'm usually just doing the cooking at this point while Ethan and daddy finish their show.

7:00 pm: Daddy takes Ethan up to bed. He usually goes to bed around 7 every night, but especially on days when the nap doesn't happen. He and daddy say a prayer and Ethan mentions all the people in his life he is thankful for. Then they read a book and Ethan gets tucked into bed. While he avoids sleep during naptime on some days...every night he is great about going to sleep immediately. Even on days when he does take a long nap. He has to have his monkey, blanket and water, and then we usually don't hear a peep from him until the next morning.

7:30 pm: Casey and I sit down and eat our dinner together. Because of the time that Casey gets home from work, we don't have family dinners just yet, but almost every day we get to eat breakfast and lunch together as a family. But actually, Casey and I enjoy our dinners together...just us.

8:00 pm: We usually watch some TV together, or if there's nothing on and nothing recorded, we sometimes read, get on the computer, or do other things we want to do. I hardly ever "work" in the evenings unless I have to.

9:30 pm: I go to bed. I'm an early-to-bed person anyway, but since Logan is still not sleeping through the night (he is waking up once around 2-3am), I make it extra early! (UPDATE: It has taken me a week to get this post together with the photos and everything so now Logan IS sleeping through the night...twelve hours, in fact. So I might stay up a little bit later now, but not much!)

Thanksgiving 2010

For Thanksgiving this year, we went to my parents' lake house and then to Waxahachie to Casey's grandparents' house. I really had such a great time this year. We traveled. We not only survived...we actually relaxed. And I so enjoyed spending time with family and introducing Logan to two sets of his great-grandparents that he'd never met before. Ethan was fun, Logan actually started sleeping through the night, and the food was fabulous.

My mom and I had both watched the Pioneer Woman's Throwdown episode with Bobby Flay the week before Thanksgiving, and we decided to use some of her recipes since we were looking to try something new anyway. My mom brined and cooked the turkey using her methods and made her dressing and mashed potatoes. Everything turned out beautifully. And the spread at the Cookes was no different...delicious. Especially a certain pumpkin cheesecake with fresh whipped cream. Yum.

These photos below are only a few of the many I took. (Check out the full gallery on our photo website.)

To the ZOO

On Wednesday before Thanksgiving, we stopped by the Fort Worth Zoo on our way out to the lake house. It is a little more than 1/3 of the way out there so it was a perfect time for us to go. And the day was perfect too...daddy was off work and the weather was great (about 80 degrees and breezy). It just happened to be a half price day too.

Ethan got to see all of the animals he's learned about, and he was thrilled. I think the highlight of the outing for him was getting to ride the train. He loved that. Logan did great while we were there...he slept for about 30 minutes in the wrap and then quietly looked around for the rest of the time. Here are a few of my favorite photos from the day (the full gallery is up on our photo website.)

Thankful

As I sit here at a quarter to 7 (sounds much better than 6:45 to me) in the morning at my parents' lake house, it is still dark outside and everything is so quiet. It's Thanksgiving Day and I know that later on, there will be quite a bit of noise...the good kind. Of food cooking, people chatting, the football game on TV. Besides my son (Logan) sleeping from 6:30pm-6:00am last night (yesss!), there are many things I am thankful for:

My husband, who is not only my love, but my best friend and partner.

My two sweet boys, who make me smile every day and who truly light up my life.

My parents and Casey's parents who love us and still take care of us.

My friends, who I know I can call at a moment's notice if I'm in need.

Our house that is no only a roof over our head, but a haven for me and a home for our family.

My Jesus, who gave everything for me and loves me like no other.

There are many other things, but these are the highlights! I hope everyone has a wonderful day today full of food, fun, and family!

Rocky

Photobucket

Ethan brought home a "souvenir" from his 2.5 year photo shoot the other day. If you look closely at those photos, you will see "Rocky" in some of them. At the time, he was just a landscape rock that Ethan could not resist picking up. But when we got home and I added a face with a sharpie marker to him, he became "Rocky," Ethan's rock pet. He lives in the fort of the swingset. And he goes down the slide "really fast," according to Ethan. My child loves rocks, so I figured he might like a rock pet. For a while, he asked me to draw faces on all the rocks that he found. Silly boy.

5 Minute Gift Wrap Storage Solution

A couple of weeks ago, when I was right in the middle of wrapping gifts for Christmas, I reached my disorganized wrapping paper limit. I had finally had enough of reaching back into the dark recesses of my craft/office/miscellaneous closet for wrapping paper. There was a little slot where the wrapping paper fit, but I couldn't see it unless I hauled it all out to pick the roll(s) I wanted. And sometimes the rolls were getting crunched, which is no good.

So, I decided to do something about it. I have a wall at the front of that closet that I thought might be a good place for the gift wrap, so I actually started looking to blogs to find some simple and inexpensive storage ideas. I found several good ideas, but none that were perfect for me. I didn't want to construct or paint anything and I really didn't want to spend any more than $5-10.

I decided to just go to Lowes and peruse the aisles looking for a solution (I didn't have the boys with me or there would be no "perusing" going on). Strangely, I found my solution in the kitchen oranization aisle. I bought two wire racks/bins that are really for storing plastic wrap and aluminum foil on the inside of a cabinet door or pantry. It turned out that they were tall enough that I didn't need a secondary support near the top of the rolls to keep them from falling over. Sweet and simple.

Chocolate + MINT

If you like chocolate and mint together, then give these recipes a try. They are perfect for the holidays. Or, if you don't like the chocolate/mint combination...try the recipes anyway because they're so good that they just might change your mind! (Told you I was on a baking streak...I'm still giving most of it away, though.)

Simplifying the Holidays

I'm already gearing up for the holidays. Several years ago, I decided to keep my holidays as stress-free and as schedule-free as possible. I don't like to have a million things we "have" to do so that I don't feel like we've spent any time at home together just enjoying the season. I also don't like to spend all of my time and energy buying, wraping, decorating, etc. so that the joy is sapped out of the holidays for me.

Here are some of the tactics I employ to make sure that the Christmas season is fun, meaningful, and actually relaxing:

1. I pretty much keep my Christmas decorations down to the tree, staircase, mantel, porch and a few miscellaneous items. Much more than that, or anything that would take me more than a day or two to complete is too much in this season of my life. As for outdoor lights...I love to have them up, but I make sure they're simple and quick. No roof line or tree top lights for our house.

2. I keep my baking to a minimum. This one is a little hard for me for a couple of reasons: 1) I love trying out new recipes and 2) I really love eating the products of my baking. But, when I just make a few of my favorite things, or just one or two new recipes, it keeps me from spending too much time in the kitchen and from gaining 10 pounds.

3. I don't use ribbons or bows on my gifts. This one is also a little hard for me because I love to make packages pretty. I love packaging in general. But, I have found that just wrapping and putting on a gift tag is enough. Most people don't miss the bells and bows and I save both time and money.

4. Speaking of gifts...I (we) only give gifts to a small circle of close friends and family. Even if someone gives me a gift, I try really hard not to feel obligated to do the same. Everyone has different budgets and time to shop for gifts. Right now, I am tight on both and that is okay with me. I would rather funnel my time and money toward the gifts that I feel are the most important.

5. And yet another one about gifts...I unapologetically start shopping and planning for gifts fairly early. Like late September and early October. I have a spreadsheet with slots for ideas and budget. Starting early really alleviates the pressure of getting it done as the holidays approach, and I'd rather spend my time doing things other than shopping. I also buy most of my gifts online. With two little boys, I am more than willing to just pay a little in shipping costs (although many retailers have free shipping around this time) and shop from the comfort of my office chair.

***I realize I could really simplify and forego gifts altogether...maybe we will do that someday, but right now we still really enjoy giving gifts when they are kept under control.***

6. I am choosy about the parties and events that I/we attend. There are so many dinner parties, ornament swaps, etc. that can quickly make my schedule go from fun to uncomfortably full. It's not that I don't participate in any of these...just not every single one.

_________________________________________________

Here are some of the things I plan to do this year because they are meaningful to me. If at any point they feel more like a task on my "to do" list than a fun activity, then they're cut!

1. Play with our Little People Nativity set and talk about/read the story of Jesus' birth with my first born.

2. Take time to put on a fire and enjoy it.

3. Make cookies and/or a gingerbread house with my big boy and watch him decorate them/it.

4. Watch Christmas movies.

5. Visit the miniature trains at Northpark. I personally have a history with this yearly exhibit so it will be special to take Ethan (and Logan, though Ethan will enjoy it more!). My mom and I used to volunteer at the exhibit (a long time ago!) when it was at the Galleria. The proceeds from this go to the Ronald McDonald house...a worthy cause.

6. Drinking hot chocolate with a big fat marshmallow on top. And some cinnamon stirred in.

Ethan is 2.5

Photobucket

Remember when being 6 and a half was so much better than just being 6? I think Ethan is too young to care about that half a year, or being a year older for that matter...but it just made me think of it. We were so anxious to grow up and at the same time, our parents were wanting us to slow that down a little! I know I do. My little boy is two and a half this month.

Photobucket

And this month he has finally decided to act like he is two years old. Mommy and daddy have had to bring on the loving discipline. Ethan's most frequently uttered word is "no." We are working on saying "yes, ma'am" and "yes, sir" instead. But, despite his two-year-old moments, he is still as sweet as can be. He always asks me (repeatedly), "Mommy...what you doin'?" Casey and I LOVE listening to what he has to say and watching him when he plays. He is so creative and inquisitive. It's hilarious to have a conversation with him, and my heart melts when I see him interacting with his baby brother. He is so cute with him.

Photobucket

Right now, this boy loves to sing songs, watch Dora or Team Umizoomi, go down slides, play with rocks, read books about tractors, and is still enthralled with letters and numbers. A couple of firsts recently...his first piece of candy at Halloween (jelly beans), his first piece of pizza (at preschool), his first bite recieved from another kid (at preschool), his first trip to the dentist (whoa!). My personal favorite "first" was an unsolicited hug AND kiss AND "I love you mommy." Just about the best thing ever!
